My Stalker: Good Girl, Bad Timing!!!

There aren't a lot of people who know this story. Hence, the identity of the girl is well protected. Just one of those crazy experiences I thought would be fun to share.

It was recently pointed out to me by a dear friend that everybody from our high school (juniors, seniors, teachers) still remembers me, while they have forgotten a lot of people who were actually popular back then, even the pretty girls. So apparently, I was kind of a celebrity.

I sure didn't feel like one. I felt like an outcast, always the odd man out. But I’ll leave that story for another day.

Of course, everybody knew me. I had joined the school in seventh grade, when they usually don’t accept new admissions. And I was freakishly tall and hefty for my age. So, not that easy to miss in a crowd. Add to that, the fact that I was a major attention junkie and always involved in one controversy or the other, and you get wide-spread recognition.

Now, coming back to my story, remember the bloomer girl? I met her in seventh grade and we became an item soon after. It was 2001 and cellular phones hadn’t really penetrated the consumer market, so we still used landlines. No caller-IDs.

So the bloomer girl used to be a part of a mischievous girl gang and as soon as we started out, her friends began pulling my leg over the phone. It was funny and they stopped after a few months. But thats when these prank calls started.

Anyone who has had a landline would remember receiving a call that one time, when the person on the other end just stayed mum and kept listening to your exasperated “hello”s. So thats how these prank calls started.

After a few months of this, the frequent prank caller spoke. “Hi”, she whispered. She didn’t say much and refused to identify herself. So, I started asking questions to the usual suspects, the mischievous gals. But it wasn’t any of them.

So the prank caller, lets call her “the whisperer”, started giving me clues about herself. She used watch me in school. “HOLY S***”, I thought to myself, “I HAVE A STALKER”.

Attention junkies love stalkers, and she was my first one. I got interested to know who it was and started flirting with her as a ploy to get her to divulge information about herself. She did drop in hints at times but was quite frugal with those.

So, two whole years passed and I still had no clue as to who it was. And she kept calling me, always whispering instead of speaking, telling me how she watched me eat, how I made her feel when I talked to other girls. I started keeping watch for anyone who could be watching me.

And then I noticed her. A tall girl from Red House kept lurking in the background and would scamper off when noticed. That was the whisperer. Finding out her name turned out to be an even tougher task that identifying her.

She was from a different section of my batch and very few people knew her well. By this point, the prank calls had started becoming a problem for me at home. My family had become severely annoyed with the phone ringing all the time. And my uncle being my confidant, I had told him about the whisperer.

He pressured me into confronting her and asking her to grow up and stop the prank calls. Annoyed by that, I did it. I scared her off by finding out her number and threatening to tell on her to her parents. The calls stopped after that.

Years later, she got in touch with me through Facebook. Turned out she was a nice person, a little goofy though and the kind of girl who wears her heart on her sleeves. Some amount of chemistry was definitely present but we were already in different parts of the country by then. We went on to become good friends.

I told her that we could have been something had she talked to me instead of prank calling. She pointed out to me that I was with someone else all through high school and we left the topic at that.

A classic case of Good Person, Bad Timing, don’t you think?
