The Forbidden Fruit
I am not a fan of philosophy but I can't help speculating on certain concepts. The forbidden fruit, for instance. I have noticed it in myself, the urge to do things I am not supposed to. Its like right and wrong just seize to exist in that moment, that decisive moment when an opportunity to do something forbidden presents itself.
I am a pretty level headed guy. I avoid rash decisions as much as possible. But I have done some crazy shit in my time, most of them because I wasn't supposed to do them and that made them irresistible. Be it a devilish greasy pizza loaded with cheese or your girlfriends flirty best friend, the urge to bite into the forbidden fruit comes in various shapes, sizes & forms.
Someone once told me, "The best way to battle a temptation is to yield to it." I had laughed at the statement back then but now that I am older, I think that logic makes a lot of sense. I think not being able to resist the forbidden fruit is a basic instinct, written into our DNA. Tell your teenager that he/she can't do something and they'll go out of their way to do it. We often associate that behavior with teenage but that isn't a correct association.
Grown ups aren't too different either. So many diabetics have a hard time avoiding sweets, even though they know it can prove fatal for them. When I was suffering from jaundice a few years back, the doctor had told me to stay off oily foods. After a few weeks of a bland diet, I went out and treated myself to the oiliest meal possible. It could have killed me., you know. But the temptation was too great to resist.
Mix that with man's other vices and you get yourself a deadly combination of doom. I have always had a thing for instant gratification. Mix that with my low self-esteem and my hunger for attention and what do you get? A series of relationships that ended not so amicably.
So the point I am trying to make is this: We are helpless when it comes to our urges. Not saying that's right, it's just how it is. Doing something wrong has an amazing thrill attached to it.
